Flooding on Koh Samui

Angie Thien for "When in News"
March 30, 2011

When W5 Magazine released the first part of our Koh Samui Issue, we couldn't have predicted the flood that would take place on the island earlier in the week.  Sudden massive downpours brought on flooding in the eight southern provinces of Nakhon Si Thammarat, Patthalung, Trang, Chumphon, Songkha, Krabi, and Phangnha—including many of the country's beautiful islands.

Due to the weather, planes at Koh Samui's Airport (USM) have been grounded.  In the meantime,  Royal Thai Navy ship HTMS Chakri Naruebet was dispatched to pick up tourists and deliver 15,000 relief packages in the area.  The ship has already arrived at Koh Tao, and will continue to Koh Pha-ngan then Koh Samui.

While our articles were written ahead, they have been revised to help readers understand that now may not be the most idyllic time to visit the island.  If you are planning your vacation later this month and especially for Songkran, please remember to check the most updated news and weather resources for Samui weather patterns.  Likewise, flooding and heavy rain may cause property damages, so please contact the places you plan to visit to ensure they are prepared to accept you when you arrive.

With our warmest regards,

W5 Magazine Team
