Going down to Phuket Town

Melissa Richter for "Where in Dining"
June 13, 2011

Phuket Town serves up the kind of food that cravings are made of. Here you will find one of a kind dishes that you can’t get anywhere else. It’s simple, delicious, southern Thai cuisine without all the bells and whistles. You’ll find bold, complex flavors that add more than just “spice’ to a dish and a welcomed attention to detail such as fresh seafood, homemade fish paste, and Thai herbs flown in from Phuket to maintain the authenticity of the dishes. The venue is a family run eatery that is small and cozy and decorated in an eclectic “Shino-Portuguese” style that is common to old Phuket. It’s literally a colorful mix of Chinese, Thai, and European aesthetics that are reflected in the food and the décor.

A skillful dish with endless possibilities for flavor combinations is the Asian Noodles with Steamed Crab in Coconut Milk Sauce (THB 130). It is a marvel of de-shelled crab swimming in a creamy and spicy coconut curry that lifts the taste of the crab without masking its sweetness. The rice noodles are served cold on a plate with a bevy of side dishes including chili dried fish, a tangy pickled cabbage, sweet fresh-cut pineapple, cucumbers, Thai sweet basil, soft boiled egg, long beans and salty-spicy pickled chutney.

Don’t miss the Deep Fried Chicken Wings with Turmeric and Sticky Rice (THB 120). Its finger licking good and the chicken is so crispy and perfectly seasoned that it’s hard to stop eating them once you start.  The turmeric was such a nice addition to the chicken that it makes you want to come back for more time and time again. Other standouts include the Stir-fried Sataw with Shrimp (THB 150/170) which are made with their delicious secret recipe shrimp paste and the Chinese Pork Stew Phuket-Style with Rice (THB 150) which is full of generous portions of good quality fork-tender-pork. All it takes is one visit to Phuket Town to be converted and we dare you not to come back for more.
