Inside The Whale’s Belly

Angie Thien for "Where in Dining"
May 29, 2012

We present you, The Whale’s Belly—one of Bangkok’s newest restaurants with a catchy name to match.

Taking reservations now, this spot sits along a buys side street off Sukhimvit 39 on the second floor of Boulevard Tower. At first glance, the undulating ceiling bars indeed hint of a whale’s rib cage and given closer inspection at the décor you’ll see further hints of fairy tale whimsy.

In the kitchen, Head Chef Apirawit Chaopo-en (Chef Mai) former Seafood Chef of Le Normandie, Mandarin Oriental Hotel Bangkok ensures that the seafood dishes do not disappoint, with crisp skins, moist filets and seasoned perfection where it counts most. Great care was put into stocks and sauces of The Whale's Belly, while set lunches, kid-friendly plates, and vegetarian selections ensure that no one is left out.

The menu is designed to use fresh produce from all over the world, telling us that this whale likes to travel. For a colourful starter bursting with flavour, try Duck and Beets (THB 420++) a perfect balance of sweet and tart with smoked duck breast, picked beetroot, needle beans and a lemon vinaigrette.  For mains, we highly recommend any of the seafood dishes from Roasted Salmon, with Crab Meat in Crushed Potato and Black Caviar-White Wine Cream Sauce (THB 750++) to the Lemon Sole a la Meuniere with Green and Yellow Zuccini and Anchovy Butter (THB 890++.)

And to end the night, try Together Forever a refreshing mix of Vodka, Campari, Fresh Lychee, Cucumber, Cranberry juice, Pink grapefruit juice, and Elderflower syrup, or for something stronger order Passion Heat by Fennel, a nearly medicinal drink with flaming absinthe. They both go well with Whale Belly’s Valhrona Chocolate Fondant (THB 260++.)

The Whale’s Belly currently has an opening promotion with a 2 Course Set lunch at THB 500++ per person and a 3 courses set dinner at THB 1,700++ per person.  So like Jonah, Pinocchio and James Bartley, you too can experience the benefits of being swallowed by a whale… or at least the culinary perks of it.
