Review: 99 Rest Backyard Cafe

Tao Chulasak for "Where in Dining"
August 27, 2011

What?  You haven't been to 99 Rest Backyard Café yet?  Okay, so perhaps a garden themed venue isn't ideal during the rainy season, but we beg to differ: When it's pouring outside, there's no better place to relax than in this glass house—warm cup of tea optional.

The food is signature of Chef Ian Kittichai, extremely causal, with no geographical loyalties, and a touch of molecular gastronomy.  Up for pickings are the usual appetizers like Caesar Salad Chicken (THB 250++), Rock-corn Shrimp (THB 240++) and French Fries (THB 110++) which are presented in a sort of shabby-chic way using brown paper bags.  There's nothing special about the fried food, it's fast, easy, and can be shared among many, but none of the particular seasonings described on the menu came through.

The '99 house' Banger & Mash (THB 290++) and Duck Confit (THB 110++) would have been fine on their own, but unfortunately seem like a menu rip off from Hyde & Seek (another one of Chef Kittichai's consultees.)  We get that it's popular, but if we wanted the same dishes we'd hop over to Atheneé Residences.

There were quite a few winning dishes however, first among them the Tamarind Baby Back Ribs (THB 210++) which should always be ordered in excess, and the extremely spicy Spaghetti Num Prik Aung (THB 220++).  It's a dish that might get frowns from fusion food haters, but Thailand has been mixing their ingredients with spaghetti for as long as there has been spaghetti in our country (and that dates back to the time of King Rama the V for your information.)

Other than that, the service at 99 Rest Backyard Café can't be faulted, and the dining room with adjacent garden truly is a beautiful place—rain or shine.
