Review: Napa on 26

Angie Thien for "Where in Dining"
September 05, 2011

Are you a foodie?  Do you care about the temperature of your porcelain china? Do your friends complain about your incessant perfectionism?  Does your mind wander with dreams of Napa Valley and sunsets in the wine washed shades of golden-green, rosé, and ruby red?

If you answered yes to any one of those questions then you need to visit Napa on 26.

Let's start with the basics, for a few months now Napa on 26 has been whispered among hungry Bangkokians as having an amazing Sunday Brunch and great food for a surprising value.  The owner, William Schillinger, was a former hotelier, and runs the venue with military precision.

Unlike many new comers to the Bangkok scene, Napa on 26 doesn't offer gimmicky promotions for super-cheap deals, nor do they have price hikes for an all-imported-even-to-the-ice-cubes menu.  What you will find is dining room brimming in understated details: wooden wine casks, a ceiling of undulating planks, large chairs, and aged bricks.  And then on to the things you'll likely never see but somehow feel: the wine is always the right temperature, the fabrics are natural and soft to the touch, and the wait staff seems to think two steps ahead of your next move.

Their menu is primarily European with a Californian touch, emphasizing fresh seafood and thick steaks.  Being in a Japanese neighborhood however, allows the restaurant to dip into a few Nippon-themes.  Nowhere is this geographical mix more apparent than in their signature appetizer Trio of Hokkaido Scallop, Tiger Prawn and Boston Lobster (THB 700++.)

The entrées are further divided into Things from the Sea—with Pan fried Snow fish on White Bean Purée with Pink Grapefruit “Beurre Blanc”  (THB 750++) and the exotic Poached “Fugu” Fish on Asparagus & Shitake Mushrooms with Miso Butter Sauce (THB 2200++)—to Meat Dishes, featuring Duck Confit & Goose Liver on Garlic Purée with Spring Onions and Potato Gnocchi (THB 950++) and Napa’s Strip-loin, Wagyu Beef served with a Shiraz Wine Reduction and Skinless Grapes (THB 2400++.)  You could also opt for a 4-course set menu, which allows you to select one appetizer, one main, and a choice between desert and cheese at THB 2000++ per person.

Napa on 26 also serves Sunday Brunch from 11:30 – 14:00 hrs at THB 850++ per person, with an additional THB 650++ for free flow wines.  Brunch includes a cold seafood buffet, soup, and main course.   On normal days, you can get a 3-course set lunch with coffee or tea at just THB 500++.
