SCARLETT in Bangkok

Samuel Castro for "Where in Dining"
February 28, 2012

We’ve been hearing good things about this new starlet, SCARLETT—so here’s the quick version: sexy outdoor terrace with a view of the horizon, sophisticated French bistro, Michelin-star menu, and a twist of the casual. Peaked your interest?

Scarlett Restaurant and Wine Bar has a wide selection of old and new world wines, as well as modern and classic cocktails. Something to be noted is their Tapas menu, which allows you to select one, three, six or nine plates of cold and warm tapas for reasonable prices (THB 190 – 720++.)

Executive Chef Sylvain Royer, who oversees all of the hotel’s outlets takes special care to bring in the finest ingredients, from daily catches to A.O.C. cheese. His menu includes a classic Lyonnaise Salad (THB 360++); Pastas named after “The Untouchables” like Al Capone, (Braised Beef in Tomato Sauce THB 350++) or Don Vito, (White Wine and Atlantic Razor Clams THB 420++); and finally Wagyu Beef Cheek (Braised as a carbonnade, confit shallots pomme mousseline, and mustard jus THB 550++.)

So what’s this about a Michelin-star menu? French Master Chef (Maître Ouvrier de France) Manuel Martinez, owner of the 2-Michelin Star Restaurant Le Relais Louis XIII created a selection of items for Scarlett—featuring his old time favourites like Oeuf Poché en Meurette (Egg Poached in Pinot Noir THB 360++), Saint-Jacques d’Hokkaido (Grilled Scallops, Truffle Dressing THB 550++), and Côte d’agneau rôtie au beurre pomme fondante (Roasted rack of lamb, butter, and braised potatoes THB 990++.)

Now on to setting: With almost half of the floor opened up to an alfresco terrace, this is absolutely the best spot for casual pre-dinner aperitifs, quick tapas, and a glass or two of red wine—always good for the heart. Inside, the feel is slightly more traditional with wooden tables, a private room with closable curtains, and vintage leather sofas, and while it’s not as exciting as the outdoor area, you’ll still get a lovely view from 37 floors above street level.

Scarlett has quite a buzz around it, and on any given night you’ll find the dining early-adopters of Bangkok testing out dishes and drinks. The place is buzzing on weeknights and practically packed on weekends, so be sure to get a reservation.
