InterContinental Concierge Insider Guide

Angie Thien for "Why in Travel"
January 04, 2011

Here's another way to app'preciate the InterContinental's good service.  At the end of December, the hotel brand launched their Concierge Insider Guide, available for free on the Apple iPad

The app supposedly helps you "tap into the collective knowledge and experiences of the InterContinental Concierges…" allowing you to find restaurants, shops, nightspots, and tips on local culture, attracts, and events.  With recommendations on over 120 destinations, video tours, maps, and a high level of interactivity, this is sure to be on the must download list for any InterContinental aficionado, and certainly an enticing introduction to the brand for future guests.

So what is the app like for Thai users?  Upon entry, the Concierge Insider Guide will ask to use your current location, and if you happen to be in Bangkok, it will direct you to recommendations from Atiphol Soonthomsingh the Chef Concierge of Bangkok (we wonder if they meant Chief Concierge?)

The next page is wonderfully laid out, starting with a list of the 'perfect day' planned by K. Soonthomsigh and a video where he takes you around Bangkok with our quirky modes of transportation and delicious street stalls.  There is also a limited, but well edited list of restaurants, shopping areas, and destinations, insider tips on what to pack and appropriate dress codes, and finally information about the InterContinental Bangkok and the ability to book via iPad.

Overall, this is an incredibly well designed application that we would highly recommend to anyone who needs fun, accessible information on Bangkok.  It also has one of the fastest and most-user friendly video presentations we've seen. The only real gripe is that there are various misspellings in the guide, which throws off the polished look.  We would also like to see the inclusion of Thailand's other InterContinental in HuaHin and more dining selections in the future.
