Weinstube at Bei Otto

Angie Thien for "Why in Dining"
March 19, 2013

If you look back 28 years at the humble beginnings of Bei Otto, you'd find an eat-in bar that catered nearly exclusively to the world-hardened German contractors working in Bangkok. Fast forward to 2013, one location change later and the venue is a go to spot amongst locals, tourists and expats all craving a bite of traditional pork knuckle and a cold stout.

Bei Otto's most recent offerings however, might raise a few eyebrows. The Weinstube, or German Wine Bar is set to attract younger urban diners who seek authentic food, served in a refined but fuss-free way that fits their modern lifestyle. The Menu, created by Executive Chef Walter Pfluger, is changed regularly with seasonal produce, and served tapas style, allowing diners to try many different flavors. Diners can start with traditional cold offers of Imported Traditional Black Forrest Ham (THB 495++) , Matjes Herring, the best quality pickled herring served 'Grandmother' style with parsley potatoes (THB 540++)  or the Foamy Riesling Soup, a wine soup that melds an earthy creamy stock with slightly tart Riesling (THB 215++). Main courses include dishes such as The Lamb, made of slow cooked lamb loin (THB 695++), Medallions of Veal, milk fed veal tenderloin wrapped in bacon and wild herbs (THB 995++) , or even Flammkuchen, literally translated as "flame cake" this popular German dish resembles a pizza topped with mushrooms, leaks, home smoked bacon and sour cream (THB 280++). The dishes are paired with a series of wines from the most celebrated vineyards in Germany, Austria, Switzerland and South Tirol, with over 30 featured bottles in total.
